The Leclerc is a third-generation French main battle tank (MBT) developed and manufactured by Nexter Systems. It is named after Marshal Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, a distinguished commander of the Free French Forces during World War II, who led the 2nd Armoured Division in the liberation of France.
The Leclerc tank has been in production since 1991 and entered French military service in 1992, replacing the older AMX-30 as the primary armoured platform of the French Army. The Leclerc is notable for its advanced technology, including a fully automated loading system, a powerful 120mm smoothbore gun, and high mobility, making it a formidable force on the battlefield.
As of now, the Leclerc serves in the French Army, Jordanian Army, and United Arab Emirates (UAE) Army. In total, the French Army operates 222 Leclerc tanks, with an additional 184 in storage, bringing the total number to 406. The UAE also possesses 388 units of the Leclerc.
The French Army is in the process of upgrading a portion of its fleet. 200 Leclercs are slated to be modernized to the Leclerc XLR standard, with deliveries of the upgraded tanks expected to begin in 2022. These upgrades will enhance the tank’s survivability, lethality, and operational effectiveness, ensuring that the Leclerc remains a key asset for the French military in the years to come.
The Leclerc is recognized for its blend of firepower, mobility, and protection, making it one of the most advanced tanks in the world.
